Wet Dustless Sanding
Sponge sanding is long and slow but is completely dustless. This is the technique to use when you are doing a patch in a fully furnished room with rugs.
When combined with proper compound application, there is very little compound that needs to be smoothed out and then the sponge handles it easily.

A listener on my CJAD radio show (December 3, 2011) suggested that he gets a smoother wet sanding by wrapping several layers of cotton around a perfectly flat 2x4. That sounds great for me as a finishing touch, although I still like the sponge full of holes if you need to remove much compound.
