Fixing a bad wiring job.

When you are working in an older house and pull down that ceiling light fixture, you may discover a wiring job that could be endangering your house. By code, and for good reason, all electrical connections must be made inside metal boxes that are accessible. That means that you don't cover junction boxes up with ceiling or wall board, and you don't bring wires out of a box to connect to something with combustible material near the connectors.

In this TV segment we had an electrician, Sandy Ragno from Solo Electric in Toronto show us how to connect a proper wire from the junction box in the attic into a thin "pancake" box on the ceiling. The pancake box gives a heat and fire resistant box for the connectors and a solid attachment for the light fixture. If you are not sure about what you are doing with electricity, call in an electrician.
