A working tip on using hole saws better.

Have you ever wondered why the centre drill of a hole saw is adjustable?

You want it fairly long to get a good centred start before the hole saw hits the material, but if it is too long for the job, you will have problems.

Look at the first photo and you will see that the drill is going to break out the backside of the counter before the hole saw seats onto the work.

In the second photo you see the blurred consequences of that, the pilot bit breaks through and the hole saw jams down onto the work.

With the third photo, the pilot drill was pulled back so that the cup would seat onto the work before the bit broke through the back side, so it settled neatly onto the job.

In the last photo you can see the ragged edge caused by the jumping of the first cut, and the perfect cut with the second drill.

Taking a minute to adjust the pilot drill will increase your safety, save your hands from wrenching shocks, and give you a nice clean hole.
