Things you discover in the instruction booklets.

No one ever reads the instruction books, even when they are written in something similar to English. But there are some gems of wisdom in there if you wanted to take the time.

Burrs on drill bits

Take a look at the drill bit in the first photo. Does that burr on the side look familiar to you? Did you know that the reason you get burrs like that on your drill bits is because you didn't read the instruction book that came with the electrical drill?

Yes, every company has the same little instruction. There are three key holes in a keyed chuck. You should put the key in each of the three holes to properly tighten the chuck, especially when you are planning on drilling through metal. Just as the drill breaks through the back side of the metal, it grabs real hard, and if the three chuck teeth are not under even pressure, one tooth will create that burr. Locking all three down evens the pressure on the drill bit.

Learning new stuff

Warning data is rather interesting to read. Aside from all the liability paranoia of the American judicial system (slowly creeping into our own as well), you may learn some new things, particularly when chemicals are involved that you may not understand.

Complicated assembly instructions

How about the big complicated instructions? I actually consider myself to be an instructions expert because at the age of 8 I was assembling all the Christmas toys for every kid in the neighbourhood because their parents could not figure them out. I knew what everyone was getting weeks ahead of time, and got paid for it to boot. So my instruction expert status has allowed me to identify three key elements of instructions worth looking at.

First, see if you have all the pieces in the box that are listed on the instructions, and set aside the extra pieces that are just there to drive you crazy.

Second, do pay attention to the assembly order. So many things actually do need to be done in a certain order, which you finally accept after undoing it three times.

Last, save all the strange English for your next house party.
